Based in Barcelona and Paris, Metropolis is an international organisation of more than 100 governments of major cities (more than one million people, some also mega cities of more than 10 million citizens).

It was founded in 1985 as a forum to help government leaders share ‘mutual learning, innovation, governance, technical/financial assistance, international presence and debate’. Its training academy for mayors and senior government executives is based in Montréal.

Metropolis also is the metropolitan section of the United Cities and Local Government (UCLG), affiliated with the United Nations.

The current President of Metropolis is the Mayor of Ile-de-France, Jean Paul Huchon. The Secretary General is Josep Roig, based in Barcelona.
