Global Spatial Data Infrastructure

The Global Spatial Data Infrastructure Association is an international peak body of geospatial science and technology specialists, mainly working in the goverment and research sectors. Its members are collaborating to develop a global network of national spatial data infrastructure systems.

SDIs gradually are being developed as government-owned platforms and resources to enable prompt access to diverse digital information — increasingly geo-tagged with XYZ location co-ordinates. Sometimes described as ‘3D Bureaux of Statistics’, SDIs are beginning to mature in both their structural concepts and in assessment of their effectiveness in various contexts and from diverse perspectives.

It is widely understood that an effective global spatial data infrastructure system is vital to help answer the challenges of managing responses to natural disasters – and more broadly it is the essential platform supporting the Digital Earth vision.
