Background

On 18 December 2009, more than 100 nations agreed to support the Copenhagen Accord, organised by the United Nations’ Framework Convention on Climate Change (UN FCCC). Download Copenhagen Accord

Supporting nations agreed to establish a ‘Technology Mechanism’ to accelerate solutions to climate change challenges, especially for developing countries and small island states. Developed countries are raising substantial new financing, including a $US 100b ‘Green Climate Fund’.

Leaders of key United Nations programmes have indicated support for d_city’s proposed digital Earth/digital cities (aka d_city) technology network to facilitate solutions from academic and independent researchers. The d_city communications services agency is now partnered with UN-HABITAT’s World Urban Campaign, the Metropolis World Association of Major Cities, the International Society for Digital Earth and is supported by many other relevant public sector and civil society organisations.

Partners and supporters recognise the digital Earth and digital cities ‘dream’ as a crucial opportunity to systematically support and co-ordinate diverse international research communities to effectively contribute solutions to the challenges of climate change.

As well as contributing a network to support the Copenhagen Technology Mechanism and science and technology advances for the World Urban Campaign, d_city’s participants will contribute to solutions for the UN Millennium Development Goals, Habitat Agendas and World Youth initiatives.
